A DEPUTY mayor aged 73 has stunned locals by marrying his girlfriend – who is four decades his junior.

Widower Kit Owen town chief of March, in Cambridgeshire, met his Filipino bride, Aiza, online.

After a year of finding love on FaceTime and Whatsapp Kit flew to Asia so the pair could meet in person.

He hit it off with her family and popped the question before the pair married in his hometown yesterday.
Kit, who has been mayor of March five times, tied the knot with Aiza, who’s in her 30s, at the library before going on to a reception at Ye Olde Griffin Hotel with ten close family and friends.

The Tory, who "can't remember" how he proposed, said that the couple were very happy.

Asked to plant a kiss on his new wife, Kit told photographers "behave", before pecking Aiza on the lips.

Councillor Owen said: "We had a meal and there was some drinking but no dancing or anything like that."

He added: “We have known each other for a very long time and this seemed like the best, logical next step for us both.”

Kit has two children, Lisa and Jonathan, with his former wife, Beverly Owen, who died in 2008

Beverly was well-known for being crowned Miss Hunstanton in 1967 and qualifying for Miss Anglia several times in her beauty pageant career.

In October 2017 Councillor Owen was unanimously cleared of making a racist remark when he allegedly said “Muslims all have sharp knives” at a meeting about Christmas lights.

He denied ever making the comment.

Local bar worker Andrew Woollard, 64, said: “I’m very pleased for him as long as he’s happy."
