Drinking Wine Better Than Exercise If You Want To Live A Long Life, Study Finds

wine, beer,

Hoping to make it well into your 90s? Then grab a glass of wine and cancel that gym membership, because science has spoken.

A recent study from the University of California found those who drank two glasses of beer or wine every day had a better chance of living longer.

By tracking 1,700 nonagenarians - a person aged between 90 and 99 years of age - from 2003, the study explored various daily habits of the subjects and the impact they had on longevity.

Wine and beer-lovers who drank two glasses a day were found to be 18 per cent less likely to die prematurely.

However, those 90+ gym junkies who participated in 15 to 45 minutes of physical activity every day only reduced their risk by 11 per cent.

"I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity," said the study's lead neurologist Claudia Kawas.

That's not the only good news for those who enjoy wine and whining about exercise. The study also found participants who were a little overweight - though not obese - cut down their chance of dying early by 3 per cent.

"It's not bad to be skinny when you're young but it's very bad to be skinny when you're old."

The 16-year study also uncovered the benefits of those who engage with hobbies for just two-hours on a daily basis and coffee-drinkers who enjoy two cups a day. These subjects were able to reduce their risks by 21 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.

So grab a glass of wine, pour yourself a coffee, sit down some more and take it easy while we cheers to long life. Thanks science!
