China sends team including doctors to North Korea regarding Kim Jong Un

China has reportedly dispatched a team of officials and medical experts to North Korea just days after reports emerged that leader Kim Jong Un might be having health issues.

The team is led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Liaison Department, which deals with the hermit nation. The delegation left on Thursday, according to Reuters. It is unclear what the delegation’s visit means in terms of the dictator’s health.

A report by CNN was released Monday night and, citing an official, said that U.S. intelligence was monitoring the possibility that Kim, thought to be 36, may be in “grave danger” following surgery. The Daily NK, a South Korean-based website, also reported that an informant inside North Korea claimed that Kim was recovering from a “cardiovascular surgical procedure.”

South Korea and U.S. intelligence communities have said they are monitoring the situation, though South Korean officials have indicated that there hasn’t been evidence that he is in poor health or underwent surgery.

A State Department spokesperson said at the time of the reports that the department is aware and “continuing to monitor the situation.” An official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday that it was also “monitoring the situation.” National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said Tuesday that the United States was “very closely” monitoring the reports.

The U.S. reportedly has extensive contingency plans in place for dealing with the rogue nation if Kim suddenly dies.
