Women Expect A More Expensive Engagement Ring If Their Partner Is UGLY, Study Reveals

Engagement Ring

If your partner is significantly more attractive than you, it could spell trouble when it comes to buying an engagement ring .

A study has shown that women expect a more expensive engagement ring when they’re with a less attractive men.

And conversely, men are willing to buy more expensive engagement rings for attractive women.

Researchers from Western Oregon University looked at whether a person’s looks influence the choice or expectations surrounding the purchase of an engagement ring.

In the study, 590 participants were shown a photo and some brief information about a member of the opposite sex.

Participants were asked to imagine themselves as the boyfriend or girlfriend of the person in the photo, who had been pre-rated as ‘attractive’ or ‘unattractive.’

Engagement Ring

Female participants had to choose the smallest engagement ring they’d settle for from each man, while male participants had to indicate the size of ring they’d buy each woman.

The results revealed that men were more willing to buy larger, more expensive rings when they imagined themselves proposing to a more attractive woman.

The researchers suggest that this may be a male attraction tactic used to show their financial success to desirable mates.

Conversely, women were found to envision more expensive rings if their imaginary parter was less attractive.

This suggests that women may be willing to settle for a less handsome pattern if he is financially better off.

Madalyn Taylor, co-author of the study, said: “The finding is consistent with the notion that desirable women expect greater resource investment from their mates.”
